Inlays & OnlAYS
Restorative Dentistry in Durham
When more than half of the tooth’s biting surface is damaged, a dentist will often recommend an inlay/onlay restoration.
What are dental inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are what is called “indirect restorations” or fillings that can be made of modern ceramics, porcelain, gold or composite resin. These materials are fabricated at our dental laboratory for maximum quality and durability They then bonded or cemented permanently to the damaged area of your tooth providing you with a much longer-lasting result.
Traditionally, gold has been the material of choice for inlays and onlays. In recent years, however modern ceramics have become increasingly popular due to its strength and color, which can potentially match the natural color of your teeth.
How are inlays and onlays done?
Inlays and onlays require two short appointments to complete the procedure.
- First visit, the filling being replaced or the damaged or decaying area of the tooth is removed and the tooth is prepared for the inlay or onlay. To ensure proper fit and bite, a digital scan impression of the tooth is made by the dentist and sent to a certified dental laboratory for fabrication. The dentist will then place a provisional inlay or onlay on the tooth and schedule the next appointment.
- At the second appointment, the provisional is removed. Dr. Hernandez-Ramírez and Dr. Lasanta-García will then make sure that the inlay or onlay fits correctly. If the fit is satisfactory, the inlay or onlay will be bonded to the tooth with a strong resin cement and polished to a smooth finish. These restorations should last considerably longer than any traditional filling thus saving you money.
Ceramic Inlay/Onlays: Extremely more durable than a regular “filling” material.
Gold Inlay/Onlay; the longest lasting choice by far.
No other modern material has the anti-bacterial and noble qualities of high-quality dental-grade gold that provides you with the longest lasting result known in dentistry. They are mostly used in the posterior teeth away from the cosmetics of your smile.
Will inlays/onlays be covered by my insurance?
